A Christmas Card To Jesus

it must have been freezing
in the stable that night
being homeless in the winter
is tough
no room at the inn
all doors closed to you

just think
this is happening
all over the world
on the very night i write
and tragically
not as a part of a nativity play

thank you for being born
sometimes i see glimmers of you
in the best of us
but at this time of year
around your birthday
i see a lot more of it where i live
a joy that is usually absent for the most part

we light up our little worlds  with fir trees and holly
with baubles  tinsel and fairy lights to celebrate
gifts smiles and generosity
it's lovely

for some of us it's the only time
we think of you
before returning to our busy all consuming lives

for others it's a p.c. 'happy holiday' spending spree
your name and memory of your birth banished
history being eradicated in the hope you will disappear
from the consciousness of your creation

but you dear patient just and merciful God
you are the perpetual light of the world
your light systemically papered over
by mammon and his magical dollar notes
jollied along by satan ' if it feels good it is good '
enjoying the best p,r. and score points he has had  in years

consequently
we all live a lot of the time in darkness
being careful not to mention the J word or referring to the scriptures
in order to avoid  discrimination social leprosy sky fairy ridicule
interesting labels such as repressed nutters dangerous loonies phobic etc

oh well
some heaadway has been made
they don't feed us to the lions anymore
or use us as human torches  to light up the Appian Way
not in the west at least

CHRISTMAS WISHES

peace on earth
good will to all men
we wish
we  hope
we pray

you have been waiting for 2000 years
we have not managed it yet
i expect your  endless patience and optimism
is being tested

maybe next year sometime

  3. Fancy going all religious at Christmas time when everyone else is thinking of taking a break and what presents they'll get this year. What an astute commentary on Christmas these days Cressida.

  4. Such beautiful music. I so resonate with your poem. At this time of year, the best and worst of humankind is on full display. I hope the givers and those who care still outnumber the dark ones. I believe we do, all evidence to the contrary on the evening news.

  5. We have made some headway, now that the lions don't have to pick out bones out of their teeth--then again, not many lions around.

May the wonder of the season and the goodness of all hearts spread, little by little... until we can all be peacefully merry.

  6. I pity the dark souls. Good News have not been brought to them & they can't rejoice. They are there from time immemorial to present day. May they come out of darkness and let peace prevail. Nice.

  7. So we have come a long way so to speak. We are not lion feed. But ho ho ho we still have a long way to go. May hope be the shoes that shod our feet
Thanks for a sincere and revealibg poem

  8. Love that you speak truth here. I say that if tree huggers are happy to preach their gospel- then so am we - to preach ours!
