What If
what if you
were no longer in my life
the ferns would pale
to a faded green
even with soft tinkling rain drops
you
who sustained me for years
you
who always remembered birthdays
mothers day christmas new year
you
who made me feel less alone in my world
you
who was everything i ever wanted
but forbidden to me
you
who confided and trusted me
with so many of your secrets
you
who were so fearful of the connection
you
who kept on reminding me a propos of nothing
that you did not love me
what if you
were no longer in my life
i would always remember the
smile of you
the lie of you
what if you
were no longer in my life
it will be sad
it will be lonely
but it will never be empty
i will always have vivaldi

Oh, my! Vivaldi, huh? Maybe I haven't been listening carefully enough! Thanks for the reminder that people leave traces, and those traces are comforting.
ReplyDeleteI get a sense of confidence through sadness, almost gentle aggression. "i would always remember the/smile of you/the lie of you". This stuck out to me as almost a breaking away from longing.
ReplyDeleteAha! Love this classic touch :)
ReplyDeleteWonderfully lyrical
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, I couldn't imagine not having memories.
ReplyDeleteThank the graces that there's Vivaldi.
ReplyDeletePeople leave and their traces are left behind but as it is said, no one is absolutely indispensable. We may still find something to fill the emptiness. Well-penned.

Struck me, as rather sad, in those memories being replaced, by long dead composer's music. I know music can heal one's soul, but I feel emptiness with this.
ReplyDeleteI think the last two stanzas really bring this story, this conversation to its foregone and wise conclusion .... there will always be music, songs, in our hearts ...
ReplyDeleteI love that there will always be Vivaldi...and nature....and critters! Thank heaven!
ReplyDeleteThat is the problem, love really does hurt and music is that cruel key to remembrance making tears flow. A most beautiful but sad piece of writing.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness for music... and for memories that speak life's truths... the bad and the good.
ReplyDeleteEverything would be encompassed in Vivaldi - music does that. I so identify with this poem.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh this is beautifully evocative💞 I love; "what if you were no longer in my life i would always remember the smile of you the lie of you."💞
ReplyDeleteVery intriguing.
ReplyDeleteMemories in/and of music.
Love it!
