For Lynn Harrell

Lynn Harrell 1944  - 2020

 gazing out at the palms

 in dappled sun light

on a beautiful summers afternoon

the haunting strains of the cello

on the radio pierce my heart

i recognize that sound

 i know who that is

an overwhelming sadness

rolls over me like a dark cloud

he has gone

never to return

a great loss to the music world

i think of you

 already in love

and wonder how i will fare

when you leave me too

  3. Loss is a terrible thing, and the idea of loss--of what might come--is devastating. It would be nice not to have to wonder about those things. But... we wouldn't be human if we didn't imagine.

  4. Though I wish you no sad parting ...
like this man's music, love lingers on.

  6. Wow: such a sad song he made that instrument sing! Sad, yet somehow soothing.

  7. This elegy is for the heart, really, becoming more full by losing loves. The mystery is that in the heart, absence is equal to presence, and the lost live on forever there. Watch for the coming week's challenge at earthweal for more on the earth poet's elegies.
