poets united mid week motif
she was watching
the oscars on tv
a black male slave
in the cotton fields
of the winning movie
said
he did not want to survive
he wanted to live
200 years later
she smirked
at the idea of that
she could not imagine
anything but survival
she had perfected it
as an art form
the idea of choices
apart from survival
were as remote as
flying to the moon
with paper wings

O! I want those paper wings to show up for you, something you could make with a friend. To not have options is too very imaginable, but to be unable to imagine options fills me with terror. I would say your poem is very effective. Let's reach out to women and learn what would be real hope.
ReplyDeleteWe really are so fortunate that today we DO have choices, aren't we?
ReplyDeleteThe majority of the women in the world have no choices. They produce 90% of food crops and are in poverty. Most women everywhere suffer gender discrimination throughout their lifetime whether in a work situation or in a social situation. We still do not enjoy the same freedom as men.
ReplyDeleteI am so grateful, especially as a woman, to live today in the western world!
ReplyDeleteSadly there are many for whom that remains true.
ReplyDeleteYes ...most are somehow surviving and not living...your words expose their plight....... touching...
