Winter Snapshots

i remember this poem well
shakespeare danced off the page
in an unheated cold classroom
the little gels wearing fingerless mittens
blazers and a winter uniform

dick the shepherd
blowing his nail
struck a chord
i realised immediately
he was not playing a musical instrument

it has only now occurred to me
(a half a century after the event)
was this expensive education
intentionally character building
or
just cost cutting to line the coffers
of the already very rich board members

Lily Of The Valley

 Mary Cassatt

her first scent bottle
plus a lace hanky in her purse
she felt quite grown up

Carpe Diem # 1481

just to let you know
you're still the cream in my coffee
no sign of curdling yet

Carpe Diem # 1480

the old shack rattles
the wind howls across the bay
she is wearing your parka
the one you left behind
so she would not forget you

Carpe Diem # 1477

the twelve apostles
guard the great southern land
at the world's edge

they've watched us growing up and
 now growing old together
